2022-08-03drm/gem: rename GEM CMA helpers to GEM DMA helpersDanilo Krummrich
Rename "GEM CMA" helpers to "GEM DMA" helpers - considering the hierarchy of APIs (mm/cma -> dma -> gem dma) calling them "GEM DMA" seems to be more applicable. Besides that, commit e57924d4ae80 ("drm/doc: Task to rename CMA helpers") requests to rename the CMA helpers and implies that people seem to be confused about the naming. Also drivers/gpu/drm/Makefile was fixed up manually after renaming drm_gem_cma_helper.c to drm_gem_dma_helper.c. This patch is compile-time tested building a x86_64 kernel with `make allyesconfig && make drivers/gpu/drm`. 2022-06-08drm/cma-helper: Describe what a "contiguous chunk" actually meansDaniel Thompson
Since it's inception in 2012 it has been understood that the DRM GEM CMA helpers do not depend on CMA as the backend allocator. In fact the first bug fix to ensure the cma-helpers work correctly with an IOMMU backend appeared in 2014. However currently the documentation for drm_gem_cma_create() talks about "a contiguous chunk of memory" without making clear which address space it will be a contiguous part of. Additionally the CMA introduction is actively misleading because it only contemplates the CMA backend. This matters because when the device accesses the bus through an IOMMU (and don't use the CMA backend) then the allocated memory is contiguous only in the IOVA space. This is a significant difference compared to the CMA backend and the behaviour can be a surprise even to someone who does a reasonable level of code browsing (but doesn't find all the relevant function pointers ;-) ). Improve the kernel doc comments accordingly. 2022-02-11drm/cma-helper: Set VM_DONTEXPAND for mmapRobin Murphy
drm_gem_cma_mmap() cannot assume every implementation of dma_mmap_wc() will end up calling remap_pfn_range() (which happens to set the relevant vma flag, among others), so in order to make sure expectations around VM_DONTEXPAND are met, let it explicitly set the flag like most other GEM mmap implementations do. This avoids repeated warnings on a small minority of systems where the display is behind an IOMMU, and has a simple driver which does not override drm_gem_cma_default_funcs. Arm hdlcd is an in-tree affected driver. Out-of-tree, the Apple DCP driver is affected; this fix is required for DCP to be mainlined. 2022-02-07dma-buf-map: Rename to iosys-mapLucas De Marchi
Rename struct dma_buf_map to struct iosys_map and corresponding APIs. Over time dma-buf-map grew up to more functionality than the one used by dma-buf: in fact it's just a shim layer to abstract system memory, that can be accessed via regular load and store, from IO memory that needs to be acessed via arch helpers. The idea is to extend this API so it can fulfill other needs, internal to a single driver. Example: in the i915 driver it's desired to share the implementation for integrated graphics, which uses mostly system memory, with discrete graphics, which may need to access IO memory. GEM helper libraries use struct drm_driver.gem_create_object to let drivers override GEM object allocation. On failure, the call returns NULL. Change the semantics to make the calls return a pointer-encoded error. This aligns the callback with its callers. Fixes the ingenic driver, which already returns an error pointer. Also update the callers to handle the involved types more strictly. 2021-11-30drm/cma-helper: Pass GEM CMA object in public interfacesThomas Zimmermann
Change all GEM CMA object functions that receive a GEM object of type struct drm_gem_object to expect an object of type struct drm_gem_cma_object instead. This change reduces the number of upcasts from struct drm_gem_object by moving them into callers. The C compiler can now verify that the GEM CMA functions are called with the correct type. For consistency, the patch also renames drm_gem_cma_free_object to drm_gem_cma_free. It further updates documentation for a number of functions. The previous commit wrongly assumed that dma_mmap_wc() could be replaced by pgprot_writecombine() + dma_mmap_pages(). It did work on my setup, but did not work everywhere. Use dma_mmap_wc() when the buffer has the write-combine cache attribute, and dma_mmap_pages() when it has the non-coherent cache attribute. 2021-05-25drm: Add support for GEM buffers backed by non-coherent memoryPaul Cercueil
Having GEM buffers backed by non-coherent memory is interesting in the particular case where it is faster to render to a non-coherent buffer then sync the data cache, than to render to a write-combine buffer, and (by extension) much faster than using a shadow buffer. This is true for instance on some Ingenic SoCs, where even simple blits (e.g. memcpy) are about three times faster using this method. Add a 'map_noncoherent' flag to the drm_gem_cma_object structure, which can be set by the drivers when they create the dumb buffer. Since this really only applies to software rendering, disable this flag as soon as the CMA objects are exported via PRIME. v3: New patch. Now uses a simple 'map_noncoherent' flag to control how the objects are mapped, and use the new dma_mmap_pages function. v4: Make sure map_noncoherent is always disabled when creating GEM objects meant to be used with dma-buf. The new GEM object function drm_gem_cma_mmap() sets the VMA flags and offset as in the old implementation and immediately maps in the buffer's memory pages. Changing CMA helpers to use the GEM object function allows for the removal of the special implementations for mmap and gem_prime_mmap callbacks. The regular functions drm_gem_mmap() and drm_gem_prime_mmap() are now used. As GEM object functions are now mandatory, DRM drivers based on CMA helpers either set them in their implementation of gem_create_object, or use the default via drm_gem_cma_create_object_default_funcs(). Simplify this by setting the default CMA object functions for all objects that don't have any functions of their own. Follows the pattern of similar code in SHMEM and VRAM helpers. The function drm_gem_cma_create_object_default_funcs() is redundant and therefore being removed. This patch replaces the vmap/vunmap's use of raw pointers in GEM object functions with instances of struct dma_buf_map. GEM backends are converted as well. For most of them, this simply changes the returned type. TTM-based drivers now return information about the location of the memory, either system or I/O memory. GEM VRAM helpers and qxl now use ttm_bo_vmap() et al. Several GEM and PRIME callbacks have been deprecated in favor of per-instance GEM object functions. Remove the callbacks as they are now unused. The only exception is .gem_prime_mmap, which is still in use by several drivers. What is also gone is gem_vm_ops in struct drm_driver. All drivers now use struct drm_gem_object_funcs.vm_ops instead. However, you can have a device that uses an IOMMU engine and can map a discontiguous buffer with multiple entries that have consecutive sg_dma_addresses, effectively making it contiguous. Allow for that scenario by testing the entries in the sg_table for contiguous coverage. For consistency with other reference counting APIs in the kernel, add drm_gem_object_get() and drm_gem_object_put(), as well as an unlocked variant of the latter, to reference count GEM buffer objects. Compatibility aliases are added to keep existing code working. To help speed up the transition, all the instances of the old functions in the DRM core are already replaced in this commit. 2017-01-06drm: allow to use mmuless SoCBenjamin Gaignard
Some SoC without MMU have display driver where a drm/kms driver could be implemented. Before doing such kind of thing drm/kms must allow to use mmuless devices.
