When I execute 'perf top' without HAVE_LIBBPF_SUPPORT, there exists the following segmentation fault, skip the side-band event setup to fix it, this is similar with commit 1101c872c8c7 ("perf record: Skip side-band event setup if HAVE_LIBBPF_SUPPORT is not set"). commit 9bf63282ea77a531ea58acb42fb3f40d2d1e4497 upstream. The PERF_RECORD_ATTR is used for a pipe mode to describe an event with attribute and IDs. The ID table comes after the attr and it calculate size of the table using the total record size and the attr size. n_ids = (total_record_size - end_of_the_attr_field) / sizeof(u64) This is fine for most use cases, but sometimes it saves the pipe output in a file and then process it later. And it becomes a problem if there is a change in attr size between the record and report. $ perf record -o- > perf-pipe.data # old version $ perf report -i- < perf-pipe.data # new version For example, if the attr size is 128 and it has 4 IDs, then it would save them in 168 byte like below: 8 byte: perf event header { .type = PERF_RECORD_ATTR, .size = 168 }, 128 byte: perf event attr { .size = 128, ... }, 32 byte: event IDs [] = { 1234, 1235, 1236, 1237 }, But when report later, it thinks the attr size is 136 then it only read the last 3 entries as ID. 8 byte: perf event header { .type = PERF_RECORD_ATTR, .size = 168 }, 136 byte: perf event attr { .size = 136, ... }, 24 byte: event IDs [] = { 1235, 1236, 1237 }, // 1234 is missing So it should use the recorded version of the attr. The attr has the size field already then it should honor the size when reading data. [ Upstream commit 979e9c9fc9c2a761303585e07fe2699bdd88182f ] In 616b14b47a86d880 ("perf build: Conditionally define NDEBUG") we started using NDEBUG=1 when DEBUG=1 isn't present, so code that is enclosed with assert() is not called. In dd317df072071903 ("perf build: Make binutil libraries opt in") we stopped linking against binutils-devel, for licensing reasons. Recently people asked me why annotation of BPF programs wasn't working, i.e. this: $ perf annotate bpf_prog_5280546344e3f45c_kfree_skb was returning: case SYMBOL_ANNOTATE_ERRNO__NO_LIBOPCODES_FOR_BPF: scnprintf(buf, buflen, "Please link with binutils's libopcode to enable BPF annotation"); This was on a fedora rpm, so its new enough that I had to try to test by rebuilding using BUILD_NONDISTRO=1, only to get it segfaulting on me. This combination made this libopcode function not to be called: assert(bfd_check_format(bfdf, bfd_object)); Changing it to: if (!bfd_check_format(bfdf, bfd_object)) abort(); Made it work, looking at this "check" function made me realize it changes the 'bfdf' internal state, i.e. we better call it. So stop using assert() on it, just call it and abort if it fails. Probably it is better to propagate the error, etc, but it seems it is unlikely to fail from the usage done so far and we really need to stop using libopcodes, so do the quick fix above and move on. [ Upstream commit 5d9df8731c0941f3add30f96745a62586a0c9d52 ] Commit 3c22ba5243040c13 ("perf vendor events powerpc: Update POWER9 events") added and updated power9 PMU JSON events. However some of the JSON events which are part of other.json and pipeline.json files, contains UTF-8 characters in their brief description. Having UTF-8 character could breaks the perf build on some distros. Fix this issue by removing the UTF-8 characters from other.json and pipeline.json files. The echo surrounds the template with double quotes, however, the template itself may contain quotes. This is generally innocuous but in tools/perf/tests/bpf-script-test-prologue.c we see: ... SEC("func=null_lseek file->f_mode offset orig") ... where the first double quote ends the double quote of the echo, then the > redirects output into a file called f_mode. To avoid this inadvertent behavior substitute redirects and similar characters to be ASCII control codes, then substitute the output in the echo back again. 2023-01-18parisc: Align parisc MADV_XXX constants with all other architecturesHelge Deller

There is currently no reason to have an own numbering on parisc, but it requires workarounds in many userspace sources (e.g. glibc, qemu, ...) - which are often forgotten and thus introduce bugs and different behaviour on parisc. A wrapper avoids an ABI breakage for existing userspace applications by translating any old values to the new ones, so this change allows us to move over all programs to the new ABI over time. So it should be an unsigned integer data. Also, even though the standard doesn't clearly say the DW_AT_call_file is signed or unsigned, the elfutils (eu-readelf) interprets it as unsigned integer data and it is natural to handle it as unsigned integer data as same as DW_AT_decl_file. This changes the DW_AT_call_file as unsigned integer data too. 2023-01-18perf trace: Handle failure when trace point folder is missedLeo Yan
[ Upstream commit 03e9a5d8eb552a1bf692a9c8a5ecd50f4e428006 ] On Arm64 a case is perf tools fails to find the corresponding trace point folder for system calls listed in the table 'syscalltbl_arm64', e.g. the generated system call table contains "lookup_dcookie" but we cannot find out the matched trace point folder for it. We need to figure out if there have any issue for the generated system call table, on the other hand, we need to handle the case when trace point folder is missed under sysfs, this patch sets the flag syscall::nonexistent as true and returns the error from trace__read_syscall_info(). Another problem is for trace__syscall_info(), it returns two different values if a system call doesn't exist: at the first time calling trace__syscall_info() it returns NULL when the system call doesn't exist, later if call trace__syscall_info() again for the same missed system call, it returns pointer of syscall. trace__syscall_info() checks the condition 'syscalls.table[id].name == NULL', but the name will be assigned in the first invoking even the system call is not found. So checking system call's name in trace__syscall_info() is not the right thing to do, this patch simply checks flag syscall::nonexistent to make decision if a system call exists or not, finally trace__syscall_info() returns the consistent result (NULL) if a system call doesn't existed. 2023-01-18perf trace: Separate 'struct syscall_fmt' definition from syscall_fmts variableArnaldo Carvalho de Melo
[ Upstream commit 9b2036cd329924082acfa5dec58deec12fa1f5e8 ] As this has all the things needed to format tracepoints events, not just syscalls, that, after all, are just tracepoints with a set in stone ABI, i.e. order and number of parameters. For tracepoints we'll create a static struct syscall_fmt tracepoint_fmts[] array and will fill the ->arg[] entries with the beautifier for each positional argument and record the name, then, when we need it, we'll just check that the position has the same name, maybe even type, so that we can do some check that the tracepoint hasn't changed, if it has, we can even reorder things. Keep calling it syscall_fmt but use it as well for tracepoints, do it this way to minimize changes and reuse what is in place for syscalls, we'll see.
