2024-02-23pmdomain: core: Move the unused cleanup to a _sync initcallKonrad Dybcio
commit 741ba0134fa7822fcf4e4a0a537a5c4cfd706b20 upstream. The unused clock cleanup uses the _sync initcall to give all users at earlier initcalls time to probe. Do the same to avoid leaving some PDs dangling at "on" (which actually happened on qcom!). [ Upstream commit e5d1c8722083f0332dcd3c85fa1273d85fb6bed8 ] Currently, while calculating residency and latency values, right operands may overflow if resulting values are big enough. To prevent this, albeit unlikely case, play it safe and convert right operands to left ones' type s64. Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with static analysis tool SVACE. 2023-03-10PM: domains: fix memory leak with using debugfs_lookup()Greg Kroah-Hartman
[ Upstream commit 0b6200e1e9f53dabdc30d0f6c51af9a5f664d32b ] When calling debugfs_lookup() the result must have dput() called on it, otherwise the memory will leak over time. To make things simpler, just call debugfs_lookup_and_remove() instead which handles all of the logic at once. [ Upstream commit 37101d3c719386040ded735a5ec06974f1d94d1f ] Both genpd_debug_add() and genpd_debug_remove() may be called indirectly by other drivers while genpd_debugfs_dir is not yet set. For example, drivers can call pm_genpd_init() in probe or pm_genpd_init() in probe fail/cleanup path: pm_genpd_init() --> genpd_debug_add() pm_genpd_remove() --> genpd_remove() --> genpd_debug_remove() At this time, genpd_debug_init() may not yet be called. genpd_debug_add() checks that if genpd_debugfs_dir is NULL, it will return directly. Make sure this is also checked in pm_genpd_remove(), otherwise components under debugfs root which has the same name as other components under pm_genpd may be accidentally removed, since NULL represents debugfs root. [ Upstream commit 622d9b5577f19a6472db21df042fea8f5fefe244 ] In the genpd governor we walk the list of child-domains to take into account their next_wakeup. If the child-domain itself, doesn't have a governor assigned to it, we can end up using the next_wakeup value before it has been properly initialized. To prevent a possible incorrect behaviour in the governor, let's initialize next_wakeup to KTIME_MAX. 2021-08-25PM: domains: Improve runtime PM performance state handlingDmitry Osipenko
GENPD core doesn't support handling performance state changes while consumer device is runtime-suspended or when runtime PM is disabled. GENPD core may override performance state that was configured by device driver while RPM of the device was disabled or device was RPM-suspended. Let's close that gap by allowing drivers to control performance state while RPM of a consumer device is disabled and to set up performance state of RPM-suspended device that will be applied by GENPD core on RPM-resume of the device. 2021-08-16PM: domains: Add support for 'required-opps' to set default perf stateRajendra Nayak
Some devices within power domains with performance states do not support DVFS, but still need to vote on a default/static state while they are active. They can express this using the 'required-opps' property in device tree, which points to the phandle of the OPP supported by the corresponding power-domains. Add support to parse this information from DT and then set the specified performance state during attach and drop it on detach. runtime suspend/resume callbacks already have logic to drop/set the vote as needed and should take care of dropping the default perf state vote on runtime suspend and restore it back on runtime resume. Unfortunately, holding that mutex around various OPP framework calls leads to lockdep splats because now we're doing various operations in OPP core such as registering with debugfs while holding the list lock. We don't need to hold any list mutex while we're calling into OPP, so let's shrink the locking area of the 'gpd_list_lock' so that lockdep isn't triggered. This also helps reduce contention on this lock, which probably doesn't matter much but at least is nice to have. 2021-06-11PM: domains: Drop/restore performance state votes for devices at runtime PMUlf Hansson
A subsystem/driver that need to manage OPPs for its device, should typically drop its vote for the OPP when the device becomes runtime suspended. In this way, the corresponding aggregation of the performance state votes that is managed in genpd for the attached PM domain, may find that the aggregated vote can be decreased. Hence, it may allow genpd to set the lower performance state for the PM domain, thus avoiding to waste energy. To accomplish this, typically a subsystem/driver would need to call dev_pm_opp_set_rate|opp() for its device from its ->runtime_suspend() callback, to drop the vote for the OPP. Accordingly, it needs another call to dev_pm_opp_set_rate|opp() to restore the vote for the OPP from its ->runtime_resume() callback. To avoid boilerplate code in subsystems/driver to deal with these things, let's instead manage this internally in genpd. 2021-03-18PM: domains: Don't runtime resume devices at genpd_prepare()Ulf Hansson
Runtime resuming a device upfront in the genpd_prepare() callback, to check if there is a wakeup pending for it, seems like an unnecessary thing to do. The PM core already manages these kind of things in a common way in __device_suspend(), via calling pm_runtime_barrier() and pm_wakeup_pending(). Therefore, let's simply drop this behaviour from genpd_prepare(). Note that, this change is applicable only for devices that are attached to a genpd that has the GENPD_FLAG_ACTIVE_WAKEUP set (Renesas, Mediatek, and Rockchip platforms). Moreover, a driver that needs to restore power for its device to re-configure it for a system wakeup, may still call pm_runtime_get_sync(), for example, to do this. 2021-01-22PM: domains: inform PM domain of a device's next wakeupLina Iyer
Some devices may have a predictable interrupt pattern while executing usecases. An example would be the VSYNC interrupt associated with display devices. A 60 Hz display could cause a interrupt every 16 ms. If the device were in a PM domain, the domain would need to be powered up for device to resume and handle the interrupt. Entering a domain idle state saves power, only if the residency of the idle state is met. Without knowing the idle duration of the domain, the governor would just choose the deepest idle state that matches the QoS requirements. The domain might be powered off just as the device is expecting to wake up. If devices could inform PM frameworks of their next event, the parent PM domain's idle duration can be determined. So let's add the dev_pm_genpd_set_next_wakeup() API for the device to inform PM domains of the impending wakeup. This information will be the domain governor to determine the best idle state given the wakeup. 2020-12-09opp: Don't create an OPP table from dev_pm_opp_get_opp_table()Viresh Kumar
It has been found that some users (like cpufreq-dt and others on LKML) have abused the helper dev_pm_opp_get_opp_table() to create the OPP table instead of just finding it, which is the wrong thing to do. This routine was meant for OPP core's internal working and exposed the whole functionality by mistake. Change the scope of dev_pm_opp_get_opp_table() to only finding the table. The internal helpers _opp_get_opp_table*() are thus renamed to _add_opp_table*(), dev_pm_opp_get_opp_table_indexed() is removed (as we don't need the index field for finding the OPP table) and so the only user, genpd, is updated. 2020-10-16PM: domains: Add support for PM domain on/off notifiers for genpdUlf Hansson
A device may have specific HW constraints that must be obeyed to, before its corresponding PM domain (genpd) can be powered off - and vice verse at power on. These constraints can't be managed through the regular runtime PM based deployment for a device, because the access pattern for it, isn't always request based. In other words, using the runtime PM callbacks to deal with the constraints doesn't work for these cases. For these reasons, let's instead add a PM domain power on/off notification mechanism to genpd. To add/remove a notifier for a device, the device must already have been attached to the genpd, which also means that it needs to be a part of the PM domain topology. To add/remove a notifier, let's introduce two genpd specific functions: - dev_pm_genpd_add|remove_notifier() Note that, to further clarify when genpd power on/off notifiers may be used, one can compare with the existing CPU_CLUSTER_PM_ENTER|EXIT notifiers. In the long run, the genpd power on/off notifiers should be able to replace them, but that requires additional genpd based platform support for the current users. In genpd_power_off() we may decide to abort the power off of the PM domain, even beyond the point when the governor would accept it. The abort is done if it turns out that a child domain has been requested to be powered on, which means it's waiting for the lock of the parent to be released. However, the abort is currently only considered if the genpd in question has a ->power_off() callback assigned. This is unnecessary limiting, especially if the genpd would have a parent of its own. 2020-08-25opp: Allow dev_pm_opp_get_opp_table() to return -EPROBE_DEFERStephan Gerhold
The OPP core manages various resources, e.g. clocks or interconnect paths. These resources are looked up when the OPP table is allocated once dev_pm_opp_get_opp_table() is called the first time (either directly or indirectly through one of the many helper functions). At this point, the resources may not be available yet, i.e. looking them up will result in -EPROBE_DEFER. Unfortunately, dev_pm_opp_get_opp_table() is currently unable to propagate this error code since it only returns the allocated OPP table or NULL. This means that all consumers of the OPP core are required to make sure that all necessary resources are available. Usually this happens by requesting them, checking the result and releasing them immediately after. For example, we have added "dev_pm_opp_of_find_icc_paths(dev, NULL)" to several drivers now just to make sure the interconnect providers are ready before the OPP table is allocated. If this call is missing, the OPP core will only warn about this and then attempt to continue without interconnect. This will eventually fail horribly, e.g.: cpu cpu0: _allocate_opp_table: Error finding interconnect paths: -517 ... later ... of: _read_bw: Mismatch between opp-peak-kBps and paths (1 0) cpu cpu0: _opp_add_static_v2: opp key field not found cpu cpu0: _of_add_opp_table_v2: Failed to add OPP, -22 This example happens when trying to use interconnects for a CPU OPP table together with qcom-cpufreq-nvmem.c. qcom-cpufreq-nvmem calls dev_pm_opp_set_supported_hw(), which ends up allocating the OPP table early. To fix the problem with the current approach we would need to add yet another call to dev_pm_opp_of_find_icc_paths(dev, NULL). But actually qcom-cpufreq-nvmem.c has nothing to do with interconnects... This commit attempts to make this more robust by allowing dev_pm_opp_get_opp_table() to return an error pointer. Fixing all the usages is trivial because the function is usually used indirectly through another helper (e.g. dev_pm_opp_set_supported_hw() above). These other helpers already return an error pointer. The example above then works correctly because set_supported_hw() will return -EPROBE_DEFER, and qcom-cpufreq-nvmem.c already propagates that error. It should also be possible to remove the remaining usages of "dev_pm_opp_of_find_icc_paths(dev, NULL)" from other drivers as well. Note that this commit currently only handles -EPROBE_DEFER for the clock/interconnects within _allocate_opp_table(). Other errors are just ignored as before. Eventually those should be propagated as well. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm Pull more power management updates from Rafael Wysocki: "These fix a recent regression causing kernels built with CONFIG_PM unset to crash on systems that support the Performance and Energy Bias Hint (EPB), clean up the cpufreq core and some users of transition notifiers and introduce a new power domain flag into the generic power domains framework (genpd). Specifics: - Fix recent regression causing kernels built with CONFIG_PM unset to crash on systems that support the Performance and Energy Bias Hint (EPB) by avoiding to compile the EPB-related code depending on CONFIG_PM when it is unset (Rafael Wysocki). - Clean up the transition notifier invocation code in the cpufreq core and change some users of cpufreq transition notifiers accordingly (Viresh Kumar). - Change MAINTAINERS to cover the schedutil governor as part of cpufreq (Viresh Kumar). - Simplify cpufreq_init_policy() to avoid redundant computations (Yue Hu). - Add explanatory comment to the cpufreq core (Rafael Wysocki). - Introduce a new flag, GENPD_FLAG_RPM_ALWAYS_ON, to the generic power domains (genpd) framework along with the first user of it (Leonard Crestez)" * tag 'pm-5.2-rc1-2' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm: soc: imx: gpc: Use GENPD_FLAG_RPM_ALWAYS_ON for ERR009619 PM / Domains: Add GENPD_FLAG_RPM_ALWAYS_ON flag cpufreq: Update MAINTAINERS to include schedutil governor cpufreq: Don't find governor for setpolicy drivers in cpufreq_init_policy() cpufreq: Explain the kobject_put() in cpufreq_policy_alloc() cpufreq: Call transition notifier only once for each policy x86: intel_epb: Take CONFIG_PM into account

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/gregkh/driver-core Pull driver core/kobject updates from Greg KH: "Here is the "big" set of driver core patches for 5.2-rc1 There are a number of ACPI patches in here as well, as Rafael said they should go through this tree due to the driver core changes they required. They have all been acked by the ACPI developers. There are also a number of small subsystem-specific changes in here, due to some changes to the kobject core code. Those too have all been acked by the various subsystem maintainers. As for content, it's pretty boring outside of the ACPI changes: - spdx cleanups - kobject documentation updates - default attribute groups for kobjects - other minor kobject/driver core fixes All have been in linux-next for a while with no reported issues" * tag 'driver-core-5.2-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/gregkh/driver-core: (47 commits) kobject: clean up the kobject add documentation a bit more kobject: Fix kernel-doc comment first line kobject: Remove docstring reference to kset firmware_loader: Fix a typo ("syfs" -> "sysfs") kobject: fix dereference before null check on kobj Revert "driver core: platform: Fix the usage of platform device name(pdev->name)" init/config: Do not select BUILD_BIN2C for IKCONFIG Provide in-kernel headers to make extending kernel easier kobject: Improve doc clarity kobject_init_and_add() kobject: Improve docs for kobject_add/del driver core: platform: Fix the usage of platform device name(pdev->name) livepatch: Replace klp_ktype_patch's default_attrs with groups cpufreq: schedutil: Replace default_attrs field with groups padata: Replace padata_attr_type default_attrs field with groups irqdesc: Replace irq_kobj_type's default_attrs field with groups net-sysfs: Replace ktype default_attrs field with groups block: Replace all ktype default_attrs with groups samples/kobject: Replace foo_ktype's default_attrs field with groups kobject: Add support for default attribute groups to kobj_type driver core: Postpone DMA tear-down until after devres release for probe failure ...
