2022-05-09riscv: patch_text: Fixup last cpu should be masterGuo Ren
commit 8ec1442953c66a1d8462cccd8c20b7ba561f5915 upstream. These patch_text implementations are using stop_machine_cpuslocked infrastructure with atomic cpu_count. The original idea: When the master CPU patch_text, the others should wait for it. But current implementation is using the first CPU as master, which couldn't guarantee the remaining CPUs are waiting. This patch changes the last CPU as the master to solve the potential risk. [ Upstream commit 23fc539e81295b14b50c6ccc5baeb4f3d59d822d ] On some architectures, access_ok() does not do any argument type checking, so replacing the definition with a generic one causes a few warnings for harmless issues that were never caught before. Fix the ones that I found either through my own test builds or that were reported by the 0-day bot. 2022-03-16riscv: Fix auipc+jalr relocation range checksEmil Renner Berthing

RISC-V can do PC-relative jumps with a 32bit range using the following two instructions: auipc t0, imm20 ; t0 = PC + imm20 * 2^12 jalr ra, t0, imm12 ; ra = PC + 4, PC = t0 + imm12 Crucially both the 20bit immediate imm20 and the 12bit immediate imm12 are treated as two's-complement signed values. For this reason the immediates are usually calculated like this: imm20 = (offset + 0x800) >> 12 imm12 = offset & 0xfff ..where offset is the signed offset from the auipc instruction. When the 11th bit of offset is 0 the addition of 0x800 doesn't change the top 20 bits and imm12 considered positive. When the 11th bit is 1 the carry of the addition by 0x800 means imm20 is one higher, but since imm12 is then considered negative the two's complement representation means it all cancels out nicely. However, this addition by 0x800 (2^11) means an offset greater than or equal to 2^31 - 2^11 would overflow so imm20 is considered negative and result in a backwards jump. This because these two functions use macro 'CALLER_ADDR1' (aka. __builtin_return_address(1)) to acquire caller info. 2022-01-20perf: Protect perf_guest_cbs with RCUSean Christopherson
commit ff083a2d972f56bebfd82409ca62e5dfce950961 upstream. Protect perf_guest_cbs with RCU to fix multiple possible errors. Luckily, all paths that read perf_guest_cbs already require RCU protection, e.g. to protect the callback chains, so only the direct perf_guest_cbs touchpoints need to be modified. Bug #1 is a simple lack of WRITE_ONCE/READ_ONCE behavior to ensure perf_guest_cbs isn't reloaded between a !NULL check and a dereference. Fixed via the READ_ONCE() in rcu_dereference(). Bug #2 is that on weakly-ordered architectures, updates to the callbacks themselves are not guaranteed to be visible before the pointer is made visible to readers. Fixed by the smp_store_release() in rcu_assign_pointer() when the new pointer is non-NULL. Bug #3 is that, because the callbacks are global, it's possible for readers to run in parallel with an unregisters, and thus a module implementing the callbacks can be unloaded while readers are in flight, resulting in a use-after-free. Fixed by a synchronize_rcu() call when unregistering callbacks. Bug #1 escaped notice because it's extremely unlikely a compiler will reload perf_guest_cbs in this sequence. perf_guest_cbs does get reloaded for future derefs, e.g. for ->is_user_mode(), but the ->is_in_guest() guard all but guarantees the consumer will win the race, e.g. to nullify perf_guest_cbs, KVM has to completely exit the guest and teardown down all VMs before KVM start its module unload / unregister sequence. This also makes it all but impossible to encounter bug #3. Bug #2 has not been a problem because all architectures that register callbacks are strongly ordered and/or have a static set of callbacks. If the waiting task gets killed by the oom killer it would block oom_reaper from asynchronous address space reclaim and reduce the chances of timely OOM resolving. [ Upstream commit 4b92d4add5f6dcf21275185c997d6ecb800054cd ] DEFINE_SMP_CALL_CACHE_FUNCTION() was usefel before the CPU hotplug rework to ensure that the cache related functions are called on the upcoming CPU because the notifier itself could run on any online CPU. The hotplug state machine guarantees that the callbacks are invoked on the upcoming CPU. So there is no need to have this SMP function call obfuscation. That indirection was missed when the hotplug notifiers were converted. This also solves the problem of ARM64 init_cache_level() invoking ACPI functions which take a semaphore in that context. That's invalid as SMP function calls run with interrupts disabled. Running it just from the callback in context of the CPU hotplug thread solves this. 2021-09-03riscv: Ensure the value of FP registers in the core dump file is up to dateVincent Chen
commit 379eb01c21795edb4ca8d342503bd2183a19ec3a upstream. The value of FP registers in the core dump file comes from the thread.fstate. However, kernel saves the FP registers to the thread.fstate only before scheduling out the process. If no process switch happens during the exception handling process, kernel will not have a chance to save the latest value of FP registers to thread.fstate. It will cause the value of FP registers in the core dump file may be incorrect. To solve this problem, this patch force lets kernel save the FP register into the thread.fstate if the target task_struct equals the current. 2021-07-14sched/core: Initialize the idle task with preemption disabledValentin Schneider
[ Upstream commit f1a0a376ca0c4ef1fc3d24e3e502acbb5b795674 ] As pointed out by commit de9b8f5dcbd9 ("sched: Fix crash trying to dequeue/enqueue the idle thread") init_idle() can and will be invoked more than once on the same idle task. At boot time, it is invoked for the boot CPU thread by sched_init(). Then smp_init() creates the threads for all the secondary CPUs and invokes init_idle() on them. As the hotplug machinery brings the secondaries to life, it will issue calls to idle_thread_get(), which itself invokes init_idle() yet again. In this case it's invoked twice more per secondary: at _cpu_up(), and at bringup_cpu(). Given smp_init() already initializes the idle tasks for all *possible* CPUs, no further initialization should be required. Now, removing init_idle() from idle_thread_get() exposes some interesting expectations with regards to the idle task's preempt_count: the secondary startup always issues a preempt_disable(), requiring some reset of the preempt count to 0 between hot-unplug and hotplug, which is currently served by idle_thread_get() -> idle_init(). Given the idle task is supposed to have preemption disabled once and never see it re-enabled, it seems that what we actually want is to initialize its preempt_count to PREEMPT_DISABLED and leave it there. Do that, and remove init_idle() from idle_thread_get(). 2021-05-22riscv: Use $(LD) instead of $(CC) to link vDSONathan Chancellor
[ Upstream commit 7f3d349065d0c643f7f7013fbf9bc9f2c90b675f ] Currently, the VDSO is being linked through $(CC). This does not match how the rest of the kernel links objects, which is through the $(LD) variable. When linking with clang, there are a couple of warnings about flags that will not be used during the link: clang-12: warning: argument unused during compilation: '-no-pie' [-Wunused-command-line-argument] clang-12: warning: argument unused during compilation: '-pg' [-Wunused-command-line-argument] '-no-pie' was added in commit 85602bea297f ("RISC-V: build vdso-dummy.o with -no-pie") to override '-pie' getting added to the ld command from distribution versions of GCC that enable PIE by default. It is technically no longer needed after commit c2c81bb2f691 ("RISC-V: Fix the VDSO symbol generaton for binutils-2.35+"), which removed vdso-dummy.o in favor of generating vdso-syms.S from vdso.so with $(NM) but this also resolves the issue in case it ever comes back due to having full control over the $(LD) command. '-pg' is for function tracing, it is not used during linking as clang states. These flags could be removed/filtered to fix the warnings but it is easier to just match the rest of the kernel and use $(LD) directly for linking. 2020-11-06RISC-V: Fix the VDSO symbol generaton for binutils-2.35+Palmer Dabbelt
We were relying on GNU ld's ability to re-link executable files in order to extract our VDSO symbols. This behavior was deemed a bug as of binutils-2.35 (specifically the binutils-gdb commit a87e1817a4 ("Have the linker fail if any attempt to link in an executable is made."), but as that has been backported to at least Debian's binutils-2.34 in may manifest in other places. The previous version of this was a bit of a mess: we were linking a static executable version of the VDSO, containing only a subset of the input symbols, which we then linked into the kernel. This worked, but certainly wasn't a supported path through the toolchain. Instead this new version parses the textual output of nm to produce a symbol table. Both rely on near-zero addresses being linkable, but as we rely on weak undefined symbols being linkable elsewhere I don't view this as a major issue. 2020-10-06riscv: Fixup bootup failure with HARDENED_USERCOPYGuo Ren
6184358da000 ("riscv: Fixup static_obj() fail") attempted to elide a lockdep failure by rearranging our kernel image to place all initdata within [_stext, _end], thus triggering lockdep to treat these as static objects. These objects are released and eventually reallocated, causing check_kernel_text_object() to trigger a BUG(). This backs out the change to make [_stext, _end] all-encompassing, instead just moving initdata. This results in initdata being outside of [__init_begin, __init_end], which means initdata can't be freed. 2020-10-02RISC-V: Move DT mapping outof fixmapAnup Patel
Currently, RISC-V reserves 1MB of fixmap memory for device tree. However, it maps only single PMD (2MB) space for fixmap which leaves only < 1MB space left for other kernel features such as early ioremap which requires fixmap as well. The fixmap size can be increased by another 2MB but it brings additional complexity and changes the virtual memory layout as well. If we require some additional feature requiring fixmap again, it has to be moved again. Technically, DT doesn't need a fixmap as the memory occupied by the DT is only used during boot. That's why, We map device tree in early page table using two consecutive PGD mappings at lower addresses (< PAGE_OFFSET). This frees lot of space in fixmap and also makes maximum supported device tree size supported as PGDIR_SIZE. Thus, init memory section can be used for the same purpose as well. This simplifies fixmap implementation. 2020-09-25kbuild: preprocess module linker scriptMasahiro Yamada
There was a request to preprocess the module linker script like we do for the vmlinux one. (https://lkml.org/lkml/2020/8/21/512) The difference between vmlinux.lds and module.lds is that the latter is needed for external module builds, thus must be cleaned up by 'make mrproper' instead of 'make clean'. Also, it must be created by 'make modules_prepare'. You cannot put it in arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/, which is cleaned up by 'make clean'. I moved arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/module.lds to arch/$(SRCARCH)/include/asm/module.lds.h, which is included from scripts/module.lds.S. scripts/module.lds is fine because 'make clean' keeps all the build artifacts under scripts/. You can add arch-specific sections in <asm/module.lds.h>.
